    Hi Fellow GradFac members,

I am writing to find out how your campus allocates education allowance funds
    to HHMI and NSF Fellows.

    HHMI
As you know, HHMI provides a specified amount for their fellows' education
allowances and some campuses supplement these funds with HHMI institutional
allowance funds. At UCSF, we provided HHMI fellows with an educational
allowance of $3,000 per year until 2004-05, when the amount went up to
    $3,500.

    NSF
NSF does not specify an amount for their fellows' educational allowances,
but they do provide an institutional allowance of $10,500 to pay fees and
tuition. At UCSF, we use the remaining balance after fees and tuition are
paid to provide students with an educational allowance of $6,000 over the 3
    years of the NSF Fellowship.

As fees and tuition have gone up dramatically in recent years, we have less
funds available for educational allowances. How are you handling this at
    your campuses?

    Regards,

    Lani
