Subject: DHS scholars/fellows programs applications out

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now soliciting applications
for the second year (2004-2005) of DHS Scholars and Fellows.

These awards are intended for students interested in pursuing the basic
science and technology innovations that can be applied to the DHS
mission. This education program is intended to ensure a diverse and highly
talented science and technology community to achieve the DHS mission and
objectives. Areas of study include: physical, biological, social and
behavioral sciences including science policy, engineering, mathematics, and
computer science.

Last year DHS commenced the Scholars and Fellows program. Fifty scholars
(one from a UC campus) and fifty-one fellows (seven from UC campuses) were
chosen from almost 2500 applications. The Department is considering
increasing the number of fellowships and scholarships awarded for the
2004-2005 year.

As was the case last year, the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and
Education (ORISE), a U.S. Department of Energy facility focusing on
scientific initiatives and educational programs, will coordinate the
scholars and fellows program. ORISE has many years of experience
coordinating other renowned fellowship programs like that at the National
Science Foundation.

The website for the announcement and application is included below. Spread
the word to the appropriate places on your campuses!
