    Dan,

Here is the first position for our new Metropolitan Studies Initiative.
Please feel free to pass it on to your PhD students who may have an
    interest.

Good meeting today at UCOP; I look forward to working with you on the
possibility of joint work in China.

    Best regards,

    Dear Colleagues,

I am attaching the ad for the Environmental Planning and Policy position,
    which will be the first
hire for the Global Metropolitan Studies Initiative. The ad is appearing in
    a large number of
venues over the next six weeks. We also have sent the ad to the chairs of a
    number of top City and
Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, Geography, CEE, and Energy and
    Resources depts.

Please help us recruit a superb new faculty member by 1) inviting good
    candidates to apply, and 2)
letting your colleagues know that we are searching and asking for their
    recommendations. (Let us
know about any leads you may find.) The closing date for applications is
    1/31/06 and we'd like to
    fill the position 7/1/06.

    Thanks, and happy holidays.

    Betty Deakin
