Director of the UMD Office of Transportation
Programs
The University of Minnesota Duluth has had a successful program in
transportation research for some years, the Northland Advanced
Transportation Systems Research Laboratories (NATSRL). Recently maritime
transportation has been added to this through the Great Lakes Maritime
Research Institute.
The Director of Transportation Programs will have overall responsibility
for all aspects of the transportation programs at the University of
Minnesota Duluth, including the Northland Advanced Transportation Systems
Research Laboratories (NATSRL), and the Great Lakes Maritime Research
Institute. This includes administrative oversight, strategic planning,
budgeting, fiscal management, and coordination of research activities.
The Director is expected to lead an innovative transportation program
with emphasis on multiple modes of transportation, and on transportation
issues associated with a northern climate. The position requires
extensive interaction with varied clientele and potential funding
sources, and the ability to raise external funds. The Director will
represent the University of Minnesota Duluth to private industry, federal
and state agencies, and other transportation institutes across the
country and around the world. The Director will report to the Dean of the
College of Science and Engineering.
The candidate must have a PhD in a transportation-related field, and an
established record of research and publications in a
transportation-related field suitable for appointment at the rank of
Associate Professor (either in the College of Science and Engineering or
the Labovitz School of Business and Economics). The candidate must have a
record of providing leadership in a recognized transportation
organization, have excellent verbal and written communications skills,
have a record of strong managerial skills, have the ability to provide
leadership in teaching and research to the faculty and staff of UMD
transportation-affiliated departments, and have a commitment to expanding
the transportation research programs at UMD.
Preferred qualifications include an established record of research and
publications in a transportation-related field suitable for the granting
of indefinite tenure at the rank of Full Professor, five years of
experience in a leadership position in a nationally-recognized
transportation organization, experience in maritime transportation and
multi-modal transportation, the ability to teach courses at the
undergraduate and graduate level in transportation and three years
experience teaching, and a proven ability to secure external funding in
transportation studies.
The appointment is 12-month, beginning summer, 2006. Salary is negotiable
and commensurate with the successful candidate's
qualifications.
Nominations and applications are invited. Applicants should provide a
letter of interest, curriculum vitae, a statement outlining your
commitment to diversity, and the names, telephone numbers, e-mail
addresses and mailing addresses of no fewer than four references
