I am publishing an open reply to your enquiry about GRASS GIS because some
others may be interested..
As I am sure you are aware there is a functionality difference between a
full GIS (like Grass) and a mapping product that is a little less 'smart'
but the learning curve is less steep..
If you are looking for software for either mapping of full GIS may I
recommend you to http://www.freegis.org/index.en.html where most of the
packages represented are pretty solid.. I have installed GRASS 5.2 on my
PC and it runs well .. I have asked about file limits from the techies..
they will respond direct to your email address..

I was hoping to get some feedback on user's opinions of GRASS vs. ArcMap
-- in particular, does GRASS have the same filesize limitations that ArcMap does (2GB grids, some max number of polygons, etc...) Obviously, GRASS's price is a lot better (free), but I have no idea about the capabilities...--j
