    I am publishing an open reply to your enquiry about GRASS GIS because some
    others may be interested..

     As I am sure you are aware there is a functionality difference between a
    full GIS (like Grass) and a mapping product that is a little less 'smart'
    but the learning curve is less steep..

    If you are looking for software for either mapping of full GIS may I
    recommend you to http://www.freegis.org/index.en.html where most of the
    packages represented are pretty solid.. I have installed GRASS 5.2 on my
    PC and it runs well .. I have asked about file limits from the techies..
    they will respond direct to your email address..

    I was hoping to get some feedback on user's opinions of GRASS vs. ArcMap

    in particular, does GRASS have the same filesize limitations that ArcMap
    does (2GB grids, some max number of polygons, etc...)  Obviously, GRASS's
    price is a lot better (free), but I have no idea about the capabilities...
