The Fulton Fish Market operates under the jurisdiction of New York City's
Department of Business Services, Frank Carnisi, Director (212/487-8475 or
8476). I suggest you call him to see if one of his enforcement agents can
get you started on a self-tour.
Trucks from all over the USA and Canada, as well as those with imports flown
into JFK Int'l Airport, line up to unload starting before midnight. The
approximately sixty dealers start opening as early as midnight, with most
opening around 3:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. Most buyers are in the
market between 4 and 7 a.m. By 8 a.m. the frenzied activity starts to slow
down and by 9 a.m. any unsold fish have been put into the walk-in coolers for
the next day, the stalls have been hosed down and the businesses are closed
for the day.
The Best Western Seaport Inn (212/766-6600) is located adjacent to the Market
as is the South Street Seaport with its shopping and nautical exhibits. Also
within walking distance is the Wall Street financial district, Chinatown, the
free Staten Island Ferry and the ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis
Island.
Enjoy!
