Dear Marnie

You have had a response from Paul Stewart on the topic of your message of
18 February. Paul's reply is relevant to fish meal processing plants and it
would be very unusual to site one in an urban center. (What is meant by an
'urban center'?). Provided a fish processing plant is kept in a sanitary
condition - the technologies and steps for achieving this are well
documented - fish processing plants do not smell. In fact, the nuisance is
the other way round. It is not recommended that food, including fish,
processing plants be sited in urban areas, especially industrial areas,
because dusts, fumes and odours can contaminate the food product. Over many
years of being involved with the fish processing industry in Britain, I
have not encountered any complaints about odours from fish processing
plants, or heard of any such. I have been involved in instances where
odours outside of the plant have, or believed to have had, an impact on the
fish in the plant. Does the local fish inspection agency have any views on
the location?
