At least one other species of fish is called "black cod". But the one you
are probably talking about is described below on the FISH LIST. The reason
there are more than one name for a specific fish species is because the
fish is found in more than one piece of geography and in more than one
language. That is the reason the FDA published the FISH LIST - to help you
figure out what you are buying, selling, or eating in the USA. The state of
California even has a "truth in menus" law for restaurants.
