According to the ICLARM data base - Fishbase 97, the common name
monkfish in New Zealand refers to Kathetostoma giganteum of the
Uranoscopidae family which is also known as the Giant stargazer.
Hope this helps

Dear All,
I am trying to ascertain the Latin / species name for the "New
Zealand Monkfish".
I am unclear as to whether it is a similar species to the North
Atlantic Monkfish or Anglerfish (i.e. Lophius spp.) or whether they
are of the Gurnard family (i.e. Triglia spp. or less likely Peristedium
cataphractum)
Any clarification would by most helpfull.
I look forward to hearing from you.
