    Joe Reardon, Director, Food and Drug Protection Division, NC Department of Agriculture
    & Consumer Services will speak on Monday at the SST-AFT Joint Meeting luncheon.
    E. Norris Tolson, President and CEO of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center will
    address the Marine Biotechnology Symposium luncheon on Wednesday.

    NCSU Biochemist to Speak
    Dr. John Cavanagh, of the Department of Molecular & Structural Biochemistry
    and a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor will be presenting at the SST
    AFT Conference.
    Cavanagh is a co-investigator on a project taking a systems biology approach to
    stopping Vibrio infections - a bacterial infection that is the leading cause of
    seafood gastroenteritis in the United States. "The project's strengths come from
     integrating high-throughput comparative genomics methods, state-of-the-art structural
    biology, computational studies, and drug design strategies," says Cavanagh.* The
     group has discovered a class of chemical compounds that inhibit biofilm formation
    - which add to the virulence and persistence of the Vibrio bacteria. There is a
    patent pending on the compound and its uses.
