    MBA in International Seafood Management

The UK's Grimsby Institute has recently entered into a joint venture with
the Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NCFS) of the University of
Tromso to develop the Executive MBA in International Seafood Management
course, which has been designed to equip fisheries sector managers with
the knowledge and skills to effectively lead their organisations in
anticipating, preparing for and responding to the changing needs of the
global fisheries market. This collaboration has allowed the two
institutions to pool their collective expertise in post-harvest
technology, seafood management, aquaculture and capture fisheries in
offering a course that is highly relevant to meeting the needs of the
sector - e.g. sustainability, trade and value chains, market access /
barriers, corporate responsibility, logistics, illegal fishing, product
contamination, recalls and certification, are covered by the course

In designing this course, it was recognised that senior managers in both
private and public sector organisations are key stakeholders in the
worldwide trade of fishery products, and that both share a mutual interest
in securing and maintaining access to the global markets. A major
constraint to access, particularly to the EU market, is failure to comply
with the requirements of food safety legislation - both in terms of
production practice / conditions and national regulatory inspection and
control systems. Development and implementation of management systems to
achieve international standards and compliance with international and
national legislation are therefore central to the course. In addition, it
is recognised that many managers working in the fisheries sector possess a
science / technical background, but have received little training in
modern management techniques that are essential for their organisations to
be competitive in the global market place. In particular, managers are
increasingly being tasked with planning and leading complex projects which
are often interdisciplinary in nature. The MBA course caters for this need
by developing the student's ability to undertake an investigative, work
related research project, supervised by leading researchers in fisheries
    management and science.

To meet the needs of busy managers, the Executive International Seafood
Management MBA is offered through a combination of block release short
    courses and distance learning.
