    The 59th Pacific Fisheries Technologists (PFT) will meet February 3-6,
    2008 in San Francisco, California at the Hotel Whitcomb. The 2008 theme
    of this international meeting, "Sea to Plate by the City of the Golden
    Gate," emphasizes bridging communication.

     

    Annually, the PFT conference rotates among the Pacific Rim states and
    countries (including Canada and Mexico). PFT supports the exchange of
    technical and scientific information among fisheries technologists, and
    those interested in fisheries technology. PFT offers a venue for
    presentations and discussions of technical scientific matters relating
    to the fisheries industries and to research institutes, universities,
    and governmental agencies engaged in fisheries work.

     

    Registration and an evening reception starts on February 3rd and the
    technical program starts at 8 AM on February 4th and ends by noon on
    Feburary 6th. There will be oral and poster presentations. (The
    tentative program will be posted on the PFT web site in December 2006.)
    The call for papers seeks presentations in:

    Aquaculture and Feeds * Biochemistry * Byproducts * Education/Extension
    * Engineering *

    Environmental Issues * Fish Harvesting and Handling * Marine Biology *
    Marketing * Microbiology *

    Processing * Regulatory Issues * Safety * Shellfish * Value-added
    Products * Waste Management

     

    The due date for submitting abstracts is November 30, 2007. The
    technical presentation committee chair is Dr. Subramaniam Sathivel
    (Louisiana State University).

     

    For 2008, PFT is offering a limited number of competitive travel grants
    for students presenting their research. There will also be prizes
    awarded to the best student oral and poster presentations. Ms. Liz
    Brown (University of Alaska Marine Advisory Program) is chair of the
    travel grants and Dr. Donald Kramer (University of Alaska Marine
    Advisory Program) is chair of the student paper competition.

     

    Registration is being coordinated by PFT treasurer, Dr. Jae Park (Oregon
    State University).

     

    Hotel reservations should be made by January 10, 2008 with the Hotel
    Whitcomb to receive the PFT group rate of $89(US) plus14% tax per night.

     

    Details regarding abstract submission, early registration, letter of
    invitation (for international attendeesa), lodging, travel directions
    and an optional HACCP Segment 2 course immediately following the PFT
