Are you asking about them as a commercial source or as a research
project for examining basic chemical functions? I seriously doubt that
any kind of reef fishery (at least in tropical waters) could sustain the
amount fish that would have to be taken for practical production of
either a nutraceutical or pharmaceutical. The biomass is just not there.
However, if you are interested in using reef fishes as possible sources
of study for interesting drugs and other bioactive compounds from the
sea, that is quite a different story. The University of California San
Diego (La Jolla) has an extensive program on looking at reef fishes and
other species (plankton, corals and sponges) as potential sources of the
interesting novel bioactive compounds. I would suggest that you contact
