A new economic report, "The Great Salmon Run: Competition between Wild
and Farmed Salmon," has been released. The authors are economic experts
Gunnar Knap, Cathy A. Roheim (U. of Rhode Island), and James L. Anderson
    (U. of Rhode Island). The report (sponsored by WWF subsidiary) analyzes
the economic impacts of farmed on wild salmon.

The authors give a comprehensive review of market competition between
wild and farmed salmon and shed new light on the contentious and complex
issues surrounding farmed and wild salmon. Farmed salmon now contributes
three-fourths of the fresh and frozen salmon market in the United
States. Wild salmon cannot supply the market demand alone without
farmed salmon, therefore, discussions should be focused of improving
practices of each farmed and capture fishery supply chain. Harmonizing
regulatory food safety standards and mitigating environmental impacts of
both farmed and wild salmon production, as well as providing accurate
and balanced information about salmon issues have been recommended.
