Hi all and Hppy New Year to everyone
Squalus acanthias - the Australian Standard name for this is White-spotted Dogfish
I am sure our friends at CSIRO Hobart Nomenclature (Peter Last, Gordon Yearsley and Bob Ward 0-Ive cc'd them) can assist with both Protein Fingerprints and DNA from verified samples
For those interested we will shortly have an Australian Fish Names Standard which will apply to all species sold in Australia. Full details can be obtained from www.fishnames.com.au
This list covers all commercial species (domestic and imported) and recreational species and will soon include all aquarium species (domestic and imported)
Part of the process is to ensure that we have verified samples of the species to ensure that in the case of any prosecution for misleading or deceptive trading that we are able to prove the species.
We will be looking for international partnerships along the way
Bob Ward is also involved in the Barcode of Life project - see www.barcodinglife.org and www.barcoding.si.edu
An opportunity for getting together on this subject will be at the World Seafood Congress in Dublin 25-28 Sept 2007 - see www.worldseafoodcongress07.com where it will be an item for discussion related to Product or Seafood Integrity
Hope this assists
Cheers
Roy

Subject: [Elasmo-l] Squalus acanthias genetic identification
I am passing on a request from Germany.
Are you working on Squalus acanthias DNA?
If so, do you already have or could you fairly rapidly (within a few months) develop a simple genetic test to identify meat and fin products from this species? What would be involved in preparing a workable test and how much would this cost (firstly to develop, secondly to use)?
Supplementary question:
There is also interest in the development of a visual guide to meat and fin products from Squalus acanthias and from the porbeagle shark Lamna nasus (because such products first need to be identified provisionally by eye, as the trigger for use of more sophisticated ID techniques).
Any suggestions?
best regards for the New Year,
Sarah
