US Department of Agriculture Releases Aquaculture Census for 2005

    Results of a nationwide aquaculture census, "2005 Census of Aquaculture," by the US Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service show that over the past 7 years, sales of fish, shellfish and related products grew by 11.7%.

    Between 1998 and 2005, U.S. sales of aquaculture products grew from $978 million to nearly $1.1 billion. The categories include:

    62% - food fish (including catfish, perch, salmon, hybrid striped bass, tilapia and trout)

    19% - mollusks (including abalone, clams, mussels and oysters) comprised 19% percent of 2005 sales.

     5% - crustaceans (i.e., lobsters and shrimp)

     5% - ornamental fish (i.e., koi and tropical fish)

     4% - baitfish
      
     2% - sport fish
