Subject: Aquaculture Interchange Program workshop announcement
Please note the announcement for a workshop on, "Improving Seafood
Quality through Aquaculture", scheduled for October 22-24, 2007 in
Hawaii. This is a workshop organized by the Aquaculture Interchange
Program administered by The Oceanic Institute. Please distribute this
notice to others who may wish to attend the workshop and present a
paper.
Seafood Quality workshop
The contribution of seafood from aquaculture has been increasing
annually in both total quantity and as a percentage of the total seafood
supply over the past decade. Anecdotal evidence indicates that
differences have been noticed in the flavor as well as the food quality
and safety between wild and cultured fish. The location and the diet,
life stage, and age of the fish can have a major impact on both the
nutrient and contaminant levels of the product. Because farmers provide
feed to the fish they culture, the final nutrient content and chemical
compositions of farmed fish can be manipulated, unlike the same fish
species in the wild. Decontamination procedures, as part of the farming
practices, may also be a possible means of reducing some contaminant
levels in the final product. The Oceanic Institute in Hawaii is planning
a workshop, "Improving Seafood Quality through Aquaculture," to be held
in Honolulu, October 22-24, 2007. The purpose of this workshop is to
exchange information on ways of manipulating the final nutrient
composition or boosting a selected nutrient component in cultured fish
during the process of rearing. If you are interested in attending the
workshop and presenting a paper, please contact
pobryen@oceanicinstitute.org. The organizers will keep you informed
about the progress of preparations for the workshop.
