FDA Issues Updated Consumer Advisory to Avoid Certain Raw Shellfish until the threat of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in the Pacific NW passes

    On August 11, 2006, the FDA updated its consumer advisory
    (http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2006/NEW01430.html) of July 31, 2006
    (http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2006/NEW01422.html) to apply to raw
    oysters AND raw clams from the Pacific Northwest due to a significant
    increase in gastrointestinal illnesses caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus
    (Vp).

    To date, there are 72 laboratory confirmed and an additional 105
    probable Vp illness reported from Washington State, Oregon and new York
    linked to contaminated oysters and clams.
