Hello Seafood Listers
I am very keen to contact anyone who has involvement or interest in
marine crabs - particularly handling them through transport and the
supply chain.
We are working with mud crab (scylla serrata) and investigating stress
indicators, amongst other post-harvest aspects.
In Australia these crabs are shipped dry, live from remote locations
(like tropical northern Australia) and can be out of water for 15 days
before they even reach a distributor. They are then packed and
transported to markets including overseas. Needless to say - a small
percentage die - which we aiming to prevent.
Is anyone doing similar research on any crab species?
Some of our fisheries have a legal requirement that empty (post-moult)
crabs must be returned to the water. I'm interested to know how other
fisheries deal with empty crabs. Do you have similar regulations on
returning empty to the water and if so how and who determines this?
Also, I have been attempting to post to Crab-L and Crust-L with no
success. Does anyone know the status of these lists?
