With reference to the naming of species of fish.

The commercial names that are to be used for the labelling of fish and fish products in England are laid out in Statutory Instrument 2003 No. 461, The Fish Labelling (England) Regulations 2003, the text of which is available at http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2003/20030461.htm. Because of legislative powers within the UK there are separate Statutory Instruments for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. I haven't made a systematic check, but I do not imagine the lists of commercial names and corresponding systematic names are different between the various texts.

FAO's Yearbook of Statistics, Catches and Landings has a long list of common English, French and Spanish names of fish with the corresponding specific names. The awkwardness of using this list is that it is arranged in alphabetic order of the common names in the 3 languages. This is fine if you want to look up the specific name of herring, hareng or arenque, but inconvenient if you want to look up the common names of Harengus harengus. The Multilingual Dictionary of Fish and Fish Products lists commercial names and specific names where applicable of some 1 200 fish and fish products in English and French at least and additionally in other languages where translations are known. I have a copy of the third edition and this has the indices listed alphabetically in 16 languages as well as by specific names. There are about 800 entries in the index of specific names.

  The original issue was acronyms for things like H&G (Headed and Gutted), PTO (Peeled Tail On) eg processes - I think there are many papers and journals that cover some of these but nothing that either puts it all together and seeks agreement from everyone to agree to those definitions and to consistenly work to them

  Standardising these issues would be an excellent job and I will raise this with IAFI - The International Associatio of Seafood Professionals - to see if they are interested in doing this job. The concept would be (with the help of this excellent communication tool - well done Pamela...) to get all the items listed (no judgements would be made unless it was obvious) and agree upon an international group to formalise the list. It may be something that could eventually be formalised thru Codex (IAFI Have membership there)

  Gerri has now raised the issue of Fish Names. In Australia we have been working diligently towards an Australian Fish Name Standard - one species, one name which covers not only native/domestic species but also imported species (like many countries we rely heavily on imported fish fillets)

  I noticed that in UK last week they have through the Health Dept stipulated correct names and have created a list of species but I am not sure it has the same rigour as the work we have done. Apologies to anyone of I'm wrong re that

  Internationall the Fish Name issue is a major problem - the recent news stories regarding the false labelling/tax evasion issues involving product being exported from Vietnam to USA highlight this and who doesnt have a fish name story from a restaurant where they ordered one thing and got another????? This is an itegrity issue and one the seafood community needs to solve
