Good to see a quick volunteer Ira

I'd just wait for a day or so before doing too much on this cause quite often you will find that we are only re-inventing wheels and someone has done the job. Maybe there is an FAO doc on this too

After that I would suggest the first step would be to start the list based on info you have mentioned - Pam prefers that lists shouldnt be attached to emails thru the server so maybe you could use a few of us that have replied to this as yr group for comment and send it to us directly

    Cheers
    Roy

    Hi~

You might be interested in the FDA Regulatory Fish Encyclopedia (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~frf/rfe0.html) and the Fish Encyclopedia (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~frf/seaintro.html) as sources.

Of course, you can check the other sources listed by Pam et al (http://seafood.ucdavis.edu/organize/images.htm).

As far as the "dictionary" of acronyms is concerned, I have a little time and if folks want to email the terms to me, I'll compile them.

Looking forward to hearing from many of you with the acronyms.

    Ira

Yes an interesting topic but I feel that Gerri has broadened the original question

The original issue was acronyms for things like H&G (Headed and Gutted), PTO (Peeled Tail On) eg processes - I think there are many papers and journals that cover some of these but nothing that either puts it all together and seeks agreement from everyone to agree to those definitions and to consistenly work to them

Standardising these issues would be an excellent job and I will raise this with IAFI - The International Associatio of Seafood Professionals - to see if they are interested in doing this job. The concept would be (with the help of this excellent communication tool - well done Pamela...) to get all the items listed (no judgements would be made unless it was obvious) and agree upon an international group to formalise the list. It may be something that could eventually be formalised thru Codex (IAFI Have membership there)

Gerri has now raised the issue of Fish Names. In Australia we have been working diligently towards an Australian Fish Name Standard - one species, one name which covers not only native/domestic species but also imported species (like many countries we rely heavily on imported fish fillets)

We hope to launch this in the next few months but you can see our Standard and all the info on www.fishnames.com.au

I noticed that in UK last week they have through the Health Dept stipulated correct names and have created a list of species but I am not sure it has the same rigour as the work we have done. Apologies to anyone of I'm wrong re that

Internationall the Fish Name issue is a major problem - the recent news stories regarding the false labelling/tax evasion issues involving product being exported from Vietnam to USA highlight this and who doesnt have a fish name story from a restaurant where they ordered one thing and got another????? This is an itegrity issue and one the seafood community needs to solve

    Cheers
    Roy
