New research suggests that the health benefits of consuming seafood far
outweigh the risks for most people, although the positive messages are
often lost or drowned out by warnings and advisories- leaving people
confused and often afraid to consume seafood.
A major international conference taking place at the JW Marriott Hotel
(1331 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW) in Washington, DC, December 5-7, 2005 will
address the issues- such as the need for balance in communicating the
benefits and the risks that may exist for certain people so the benefits
are not lost- and will ask the questions that need to be asked to
understand how risks should be interpreted and applied; and will attempt
to arrive at answers to a range of questions about the role of seafood on
human health. The conference is scheduled to begin at 8:30 am, Monday,
December 5 and conclude at 5:00 pm, Wednesday, December 7.
The goals of Seafood & Health '05: Issues, Questions, & Answers are to:
- Facilitate science-based, non-political discussions about the role of
seafood in a healthy diet;
- Examine the role of seafood in other cultures or subpopulations;
- Provide information that will help consumers balance the benefits and
risks of seafood consumption; and
- Understand how new knowledge of the benefits and risks can affect the
health of specific population segments.
The conference will bring together medical and health professionals,
researchers, nutrition educators, dietitians, policy makers, opinion
leaders, journalists, and the seafood industry from around the world.
The three-day program will cover the latest research findings, and will
feature presentations from leading researchers and authors. The
