The US Food and Drug Administration Center for Food Safety and Applied
Nutrition issued a Final Rule which amends the food additive regulations
to provide for the safe use of ionizing radiation for control of Vibrio
species and other foodborne pathogens in fresh or frozen molluscan
shellfish (e.g., oysters, mussels, clams, etc.). This action is in
response to a petition filed by the National Fisheries Institute and
the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry. This rule is
    effective August 16, 2005.

Objections and hearing requests are due to CFSAN by September 15, 2005.
