The International Association of Fish Inspectors (IAFI) is holding their
6th World Congress for the first time in the southern hemisphere jointly
hosted by SSA and the New Zealand Seafood Industry Council (SEAFIC).
Executive Director of IAFI, John Emberley, has recently announced support
for the Congress from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization
(UNIDO) which clearly adds further international recognition. All
information can be obtained from www.iafi.net/congress or from the
conference organizers at email iafi2005@ausconvservices.com.au.
Dr Grimur Valdimarsson, Director, Fisheries Industries Division, FAO,
commented "The IAFI meetings have become a very important forum for
seafood inspection, food safety and quality management - not least for
developing countries - in light of their important contribution to global
fish trade."
Seafood is now the world's most commonly traded food product. Ensuring a
safe, secure seafood supply while meeting demands for sustainable seafood
management requires balanced discussion about a range of issues. The
recent tsunami disaster has highlighted many of these issues and has
demonstrated how cooperation can overcome many of the problems. In
addition matters such as health benefits, staying viable whilst meeting
regulatory requirements, consistency with compliance, traceability and
biosecurity issues, etc are all on the program.
As Sirilak Suwanrangsi, President IAFI, says "The IAFI World Congress is
the meeting of minds where we can turn our differences into
opportunities", and offers her invitation for everyone involved in seafood
to step onto the world stage and make a difference.
