The suffering and loss of life from the December 26 tsunami are
staggering. Today the National Fisheries Institute (McLean, VA USA)
announced that it is coordinating a relief effort among the seafood
community for victims of the recent devestating tsunami. NFI details on
how you can assist are below.

NFI ALERT -- SEAFOOD COMMUNITY OUTREACH TO TSUNAMI VICTIMS - HOW YOU CAN
HELP
The tsunami has claimed more than 120,000 lives to date and the fate of
the survivors is tenuous. The loss is very personal to our seafood
community as many of you have business partners who have been severely
impacted by this disaster. We also know that those of you who do not have
business relationships in this region are shocked and saddened by the
enormity of this catastrophe. NFI's Officers announced today that a fund
has been developed through which the seafood community can support the
victims and prevent further loss of life.
NFI has learned that most aid groups do not need material, but instead
funds for relief efforts. At this point, the health needs of the
populations are immediate. According to the World Health Organization up
to five million people in the Indian Ocean region are unable to get basic
requirements - clean water, shelter, food, sanitation and health care --
to stay alive.
NFI will collect funds over the next two weeks and beyond and provide
donations on behalf of the seafood community to single or several aid
groups, such as Doctors without Borders. Aid groups will be identified
based on their ability to keep administrative costs low - essentially to
assure people that as much aid as possible is getting to impacted people.
NFI is also working with Paul Clark of Seafood Supply Company (who
announced a challenge yesterday) to ensure the seafood community has a
coordinated approach to these relief efforts.
