    Graduate Assistantship Announcement

    Department of Food Science, Louisiana State University

     

    The Food Microbiology and Seafood Technology programs in the Department
    of Food Science at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge are
    offering a graduate assistantship for a student pursuing a Ph.D.
    degree. This position is a component of a research team for a
    multi-institution research project funded by the
    USDA-CSREES-Epidemiological Approaches for Food Safety program.

     

    This research project involves determining ecological factors and
    potential control processes for pathogenic strains of Vibrio vulnificus
    and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in U.S Gulf oysters harvested in Louisiana.
    Primary responsibilities for this position include coordinating and
    performing environmental and oyster monitoring and sample collection on
    oyster harvesting vessels from multiple locations along with extensive
    microbiological laboratory work involving Vibrio enumeration, growth and
    survival and pathogenic strain isolation and identification.

     

    Requirements include a M.S. in food microbiology or closely allied
    degree and interest and ability to perform experimental activities on
    board oyster harvesting vessels in addition to laboratory work. A
    stipend of $18K per year is available for three years. The project
    starts in January 2005! The application deadline to the LSU graduate
    school for Spring 2005 semester for pre-approval by the Food Science
    department is November 5, 2004!! For further application details,

    Also, the applicant must meet the following LSU departmental admission
    requirements in Food Science:

    1) Min GPA 3.0 (based on a 4.0 system) from BS degree,

    2) TOEFL of min 213 (CB) or 550 (PB),

    3) GRE of min 1000 (verbal and quantitative),

    4) 3 letters of recommendation, addressed to Dr. Witoon Prinyawiwatkul

    5) statement of purpose (which is part of the form if admission is done
    online).

     

    Additionally, tuition reduction will be 2/3 through Spring 2005, and
    100% exempted in Fall 2005.
