Gentlemen,
I just returned from a trip to a small island country in the Indian Ocean
that is exporting seafood product (tuna) into the EU. They will continue to do so
in 2005. I met with government, industry and fishing representatives during
my fact finding mission. Approximately 90% of the people that I spoke with had
no idea of the EU General Food Law Regulation 178/2002, Article 18, which will
require, "that traceability of food or food-producing animals or any other
substance intended, or expected, to be incorporated into food or feed shall
establish at all stages of production, processing, and distribution." It also
requires the identification of supplier and customer for each market channel
transaction, and provisions of all relevant documentation.
Could anyone out there familiar with this regulation and the EU traceability
standards shed some light on this area. January of 2005 is fast approaching.
Thank you in advance for your insights.
