Dr. George Flick (Virgnia Tech, CFAST) requested that I post the following
    vacancy announcement.

    =======================================================================
Subject: Position Vacancy - Research Associate at Virginia Tech (CFAST)

    Position Announcement

Research Associate, Commercial Fish and Shellfish Technology (CFAST) Group
Department of Food Science and Technology Virginia Tech, Blacksburg,
    Virginia.

Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate, CFAST
Group, Department of Food Science and Technology, Virginia Tech. This is
a full-time, restricted position. Responsibilities include providing
laboratory support for a University Distinguished Professor (UDP) in areas
related to histamine analysis of environmental surveys of seafood
processing facilities and in high pressure processing research. Minimum
requirements include a Masters degree in food science and technology,
microbiology, biology or related field and experience. Proficiency in
routine microbiological and chemical analysis using good laboratory
practices is required. Proficiencies in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access,
Power Point), and Outlook Express and statistical analysis software are
required for this position. The qualified applicant must be willing to
work with radioisotopes and be certified or have the ability to become
certified by the Virginia Tech Radiation Safety Office. Experience with
high pressure processing is desirable, as the position will include
processing and analyzing samples subjected to high hydrostatic pressure.
Proficiency in environmental sampling techniques, isolation of bacteria,
identification of histamine-forming bacteria, sensory analysis, and
texture analysis is also desired. The qualified applicant must also
possess a valid driver's license and be able to lift at least 50 pounds.

Projects for this position include: 1) collecting fish samples during warm
weather from fishing vessels and tracking the formation of biogenic amines
from progenitor compounds; 2) working with seafood processing facilities
to determine how unit operations impact biogenic amine increases from the
baseline compositions; and 3) investigating the effects of high
hydrostatic pressure processing on the reduction of food-borne pathogens.
Some of this research will require evening and weekend work as well as
some over night trips to collect samples. This position will be overseen
by Dr. Flick, UDP, but the qualified candidate will be self-motivated and
capable of performing the work independently with little supervision.
The qualified candidate should have some supervisory experience as this
position will supervise one to two students who will assist in the
laboratory. The qualified candidate will also need to be able to do the
research, analyze the data and present the results, either in written or
oral reports, to members of academia and industry.

If you go to the Virginia Tech personnel services website (www.ps.vt.edu)
you can find this job listed under posting number 041138 or under the
working title of Research Associate in the department of Food Science and
Technology. Please submit an application and resume, along with
transcripts and three references on-line from this site as well. Review
of applications will continue until the position is filled.

Virginia Tech is an equal opportunity employer.
