JOB TITLE: Manager, Sustainable Fisheries Initiative DIVISION: Global Marine Programs
REPORTS TO: Heather Tausig, Director of Conservation AVAILABILITY: Immediately
DAYS & HRS: M- F; 35 - 40 Hrs/Wk and as needed
Job Summary:
Direct all operations and programmatic functions of the Sustainable Fisheries Initiative (SFI), including EcoSound, a business/environment partnership evaluating environmental best practices related to wild and aquacultured seafood species. Generate grant proposals (>$100,000) and oversee work toward specific conservation goals. Coordinate and facilitate fisheries-related forums and other sustainable seafood events. Provide professional support to other Aquarium staff on fisheries topics.
Primary Job Duties:
Oversee Sustainable Fisheries Initiative including EcoSound Project.
Collaborate with Director of Conservation to secure outside funding for continuance of existing departmental programs.
Supervise full-time and part-time professional and administrative staff members and volunteers.
Participate in both conservation- and industry-based local, national and international meetings and events which deal with critical sustainable fisheries issues in which the NEAq has a vested interest.
Write articles on sustainable fisheries projects and submit articles for publication.
Manage departmental affairs in director or VP's absence.
Provide sustainable fisheries support to NEAq staff and departments as needed.
Secondary Job Duties:
Serve as liaison with funders to communicate progress on existing grant activities.
Compile technical information on aquatic fisheries topics.
Represent the conservation policies of the New England Aquarium at local, national and international forums and with leaders of other organizations and political leaders up to the congressional level.
Job Qualifications:
Education: Preferred - Ph.D. in marine policy, biology, ecology or environmental law degree. Ten (10) years experience at the staff and project management level; extensive knowledge of marine conservation issues; professional publications in science and/or policy; budget and grant management; proven fundraising experience; science or policy background with aquatic focus; excellent communication skills (verbal and written); ability to work as a team member; ease and confidence in handling media and potentially sensitive issues. Familiarity with both fishery and aquaculture based seafood production.
Experience:
Demonstrated proficiency in writing and library or legal research. Previous scientific research or management experience and ability to work successfully under limited supervision is helpful. Must have strong oral (public speaking) and written communication skills. Basic office experience, highly organized. Ability to meet deadlines and aptly manage multiple simultaneous projects.
