Hi Anne and Seafood HACCP Mailing List,
I checked with Ms. Erin Morris (U.S. Department of Agriculture) to find a
reply for Anne's inquiry on how to label her product. I also asked for
the status of the Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) rule. Ms. Morris'
reply is below.
The USDA COOL web site is at: http://www.ams.usda.gov/cool/ [it is
temporarily off line at the moment, try it later on today or on Monday.]

Subject: RE: Question regarding Country of Origin Labeling
Pamela,
Thanks for your inquiry on country of origin labeling. With respect to
the question below, in the example that was provided in which the wild
fish was harvested and processed in the U.S. and thus meets the
requirements to be labeled as having a U.S. origin, under the proposed
rule "product of the U.S." would be acceptable. As far as the final
rule is concerned, it should be published within the next several months
and will be posted on our website as soon as it was published.
I hope you find this information helpful and please feel free to contact
me again should you have further questions.
Thanks,
Erin Morris
