To: Seafood HACCP Mailing List
Please disregard my March 18 message indicating that hydrogen peroxide is
not approved as a bleaching agent. It is considered GRAS when used with
good manufacturing or feeding practice.
This correction comes from Ira Somerset who worked for FDA for 33 years
mostly in Boston before retiring. [The 3/18/04 reference to IS is NOT
Ira.]
I apologize for any confusion that the 3/18/04 message may have conveyed.
Fortunately this listserv has many experts in industry, regulatory, and
academia who are generous with their time and knowledge in assisting the
seafood community as a public service.
The CFR lists many uses for hydrogen peroxide, though there were strict
limitations in 1986, they have been removed as of 2003. Here is the CFR
citation that Ira has found for our subscribers:
"[Code of Federal Regulations]
[Title 21, Volume 6]
[Revised as of April 1, 2003]
>From the U.S. Government Printing Office via GPO Access
[CITE: 21CFR582.1366]
TITLE 21--FOOD AND DRUGS
CHAPTER I--FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
PART 582--SUBSTANCES GENERALLY RECOGNIZED AS SAFE
Subpart B--General Purpose Food Additives
Sec. 582.1366 Hydrogen peroxide.
(a) Product. Hydrogen peroxide.
(b) [Reserved]
(c) Limitations, restrictions, or explanation. This substance is
generally recognized as safe when used as a bleaching agent in accordance
with good manufacturing or feeding practice."
Note that there are restrictions on its use as an anti-microbial agent, but
this seems to be the word on its use as a bleaching agent.
