As of May 26, 2003 the EU began posting a weekly internet report with
information on all notifications from the "Rapid Alert System," a network
of national authorities managed by the European Commission that exchanges
information on measures taken to address potential health risks in the
area of food and feed.
Information includes the type of product and the problem identified, the
origin of the product and the notifying Member State. Trade names and the
identiy of individual companies are not published. Information is
classified under two headings:
- "Alert Notifications" (when immediate action is required, e.g.,
withdrawal/recall), and
- "Information Notifications" (when immediate action is not needed because
the product has not reached the market).
In addition to a press release and the first weekly report, the Commission
has also posted the "Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed Report for the
Year 2002." This 30 page report gives an overview of all the
notifications, the breakdown of notifications by notifying Member State,
by food product concerned [including "Fish, Crustaceans and Molluscans"],
by the hazard identified and by producing country.
