Today FDA announced publication of the final two food safety proposed
regulations required by the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism
Preparedness and Response Act of 2002 ("The Act"). There are a total of
four proposed regulations to the Act which gave FDA new authority to
    protect the nation's food supply.

Today's two proposals deal with establishing and maintaining records
(section 306) among food firms, and the administrative detention (section
    303) of foods that may pose a risk to public health. The other two
proposals, concerning the registration of food facilities (section 305)
and prior notice of imported foods (section 307), were published in
    January 2003.

A summary of today's two proposals are featured in a news release at:
    http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/fpbtact3.html A comment period of 60 days
will be provided on these proposals.

Copies of the proposed regulations and fact sheets on all four proposals
are on the web at: http://www.fda.gov/oc/bioterrorism/bioact.html

The above information is IMPORTANT for food processors and importers
    conducting commerce in the U.S.
