The Fisheries Industrial Technology Center (FITC) of the School of
Fisheries & Ocean Sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is
aggressively expanding its training and research capability to serve the
needs of Alaska, the foremost commercial fishing sector in the US. This
period of growth presents a unique and exciting opportunity for
professional development. FITC is formally announcing the availability of
a Post-Doctoral/Research Associate appointment (description below). If
you would please bring this announcement to the attention of persons you
consider qualified, I would appreciate it. Inquiries and/or CVs can be
directed to my attention.
Position: We are seeking a post-doctoral fellow to join us in a USDA-ARS
funded research project that involves making high value components for
aquacultural feeds from the by-products of seafood processing in Alaska.
Our partners in this research include the USDA Agricultural Research
Service in Fairbanks, the Univ. Idaho Hagerman Fish Culture Experiment
Station and the Oceanic Institute in Hawaii. Fish processing operations in
Alaska produce roughly 1.5 million metric tons of fish waste annually.
There are large differences in the scale of fish processing in Alaska.
Some shore-side facilities can process more than 3 million pounds per day,
and waste streams range from a high of 1,200 tons to as little as 5 tons
per day. Salary is based on University rules, and includes a full benefits
package.
Requirements: We seek an independent and self-motivated scientist eager to
collaborate with our existing team. A PhD in Food Science, nutrition,
technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics or
related field of biological or physical science - is required. A working
knowledge of fish harvesting and processing is desirable. The successful
candidate will conduct research on developing these higher value
components and help to coordinate the research program.
Kodiak: The Fishery Industrial Technology Center is located in Kodiak
Alaska, a 4,500 mi2 archipelago 250 air miles SW of Anchorage and is a
division of the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the University
of Alaska Fairbanks. Kodiak has a population of 14,000 and is served with
5 airline flights per day. While not in the wilderness, but poised on its
edge, Kodiak offers extraordinary recreational opportunities for those who
like the out-of-doors. The schools and other services are also excellent.
FITC: With 9 tenured and tenure track faculty, 10 graduate students and a
professional staff of 10, FITC has research and graduate programs in
Sustainable Harvesting and Seafood Processing. Our 5,000 ft2 pilot plant
contains a variety of efficient processing equipment, while our four
analytical labs contain the most modern automated laboratory devices for
studies in biology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry and seafood
engineering. We conduct roughly $3 million worth of funded research
annually. FITC also has housing for the successful candidate.
