The Seafood Network Information Center server has been off-line for
several days now. I'm told that it is expected to be back on the Internet
on Monday, but it will be temporarily re-routed to the UCD Food Science &
Technology Dept. server. The URL address will remain the same,
http://seafood.ucdavis.edu
Yesterday "code red" worm was removed from the server. It had been there
for quite some time. Phil, our computer specialist, ran into my room on
Wednesday and informed me that "SeafoodNIC" was trying to invade other
computers on campus!! Then today, Nimda, yet a different virus came out
of hibernation and started to try and attack 12 IP addresses in our
department. So for now, Phil has taken SeafoodNIC off-line.
Phil has assured me that people who previously accessed the server are not
vulnerable to the two worms/viruses that we had. I've taken additional
precautions (replaced my previous addition of Norton Antivirus with a
corporate edition) and bought a new license for our outdated firewall.
By the way, I'm asking you to be my extra eyes. If you see something on
the web site that you think would be suitable on the SeafoodNIC, please
e-mail me (pdtom@ucdavis.edu) the website address and I'll look into the
possibility of linking to the site.
