I am the Ec Dev Coordinator for Masset, on the Queen Charlotte Islands, west
coast of British Columbia, Canada. I am trying to assist one of our local
seafood plant, with finding markets for some of their "waste" products from
processing dogfish. They currently have markets for the bellies, backs, fins
and heads but are not having to deal with internal organs, eggs, and skin as
waste.
Are there markets for any of these products? They have found a buyer for the
skins to make leather but the purchaser wants to have the skins scrapped clean
of all meat and this is not cost-effective for the price they are willing to
pay. I was wondering if there might be an enzyme or bacteria that might be
able to remove the skin without damaging the skins.
Also, we tested the shark eggs by handling them and dropping them for various
heights and they are quite strong and would be able to handle shipping if we
can find a market. Does anyone know if the eggs are used at all in the Asian
markets or whether they can be powdered or frozen and used for other purposes?
Hoping to hear from you soon
