The detection Limit of any analysis cannot be ZERO
    this is a physical impossibility.

I would sincerely question the technical expertise of anyone claiming a ZERO
    detection limit for an analysis.

cross reactivity is an essentially unrelated parameter of specificity

tests can be highly sensitive [very low detection limits] but have poor
    specificity and the converse etc.

Also I have been told by the FDA lab staff in Denver that they are not using
screening tests but are going straight to the GC-ECD method published in
JAOAC by them for all samples - then confirming any positives by GC-MS.

    Daniel:

Here in Ecuador there are some institutions (SGS, INP,
etc.) which are doing ELISA tests for chloramphenicol.
This is the standard method accepted by FDA as first
method of chloramphenicol detection. If this method
give a postive result, then they check by HPLC to
    confirm.

They say the detection limit for ELISA is 0 (zero),
but there is an incidence percentage, 0.01%, for cross
reactions with other antibiotics of the same family
    (tiamphenicol and florfenicol).
