Let me quote from 'North Atlantic Seafood' by Alan Davidson, (the thinking fish technologist's cookbook), with reference to the Mediterranean species of Scyllarus: 'They both make cricket-like noises in the water, which accounts for most of their common names; while a supposed resemblance to a slipper accounts for others'. Their Portuguese names sum it up: cigarra do mar and lagosta da pedra.

Can anyone tell me how slipper lobsters (Ibacus ciliatus, Scylarides spp., Thenus orientalis) got their name?

      Thanks
