In the thousand + visits I have made to big fish markets I have never
seen a luvar, Luvarus imperialis. How rare are these fish? I have seen
lots of opah, Lampris guttatus, so I am looking forward to seeing my
first luvar. The reason for my current interest is that this year will
mark the 100th anniversary of a luvar capture off Guernsey, Channel
Islands, GB. I write for the local paper on marine matters and I would
like to commemorate the occurrence of a luvar in local waters 100 years
ago.
Where would be the best place to see a luvar? How often are they caught
and where? (I know about the luvar that turned up in the Sydney fish
market in November 1997.) I presume they are harvested for human
consumption somewhere because they are specifically mentioned in
European Community regulations on the setting of maximum levels of
contaminants in fishes. In the EU - for cadmium contamination the
maximum allowable level in fish muscle is 0.05 mg/kg wet weight but
certain species including luvar are allowed to be sold with cadmium
levels up to 0.1 mg/kg wet weight. Where are they fished /landed for
human consumption?
Yours sincerely,
Richard
