Hello Mike: I'm only responding to you on this... I'm copying Pam in case
she wants to post it.
The international fishmeal industry has addressed this issue many times.
There are no quick methods for TVB or as we call it TVN. The method of
choice for fishmeal and raw fish materials is the AOAC Method for ammonia
nitrogen which involves a kjeldahl distillation and back titration (AOAC
920.03).
Essentially you are determining free bases that are distilled under the
test conditions. There are micro kjeldahls available I think Buchii makes
one. A more elaborate method is the Conway method which does the same
thing but involves more complex equipment and takes longer.
We have attempted to use specific ion electrodes with little luck. We
used the Torrymeter for our surimi operation with some good results but
I'm not sure if it would work with fishwaste.
Neogen has a histamine test kit which seems to be accurate. If the waste
comes from a species that develops high histamine then perhaps that would
work. I understand that they are also developing a cadaverine test kit.
I'm not sure if a TVN or TVB test kit is available anywhere. I know there
are several organizations that produce test kits based on the ELISA
system.
Hope this helps.

| Hello to all - I received a call from a local processor who sells fish
waste
| to pet food manufacturers. They are asking him to do a TVB test on the
| waste first to determine the quality. I have 2 questions for the group.
|
| 1. Are there any rapid methods for TVB that he could use in his plant.
|
| 2. If not are there any other rapid methods that he might use for fish
| waste to determine quality.
|
| Thanks - Michael Morrissey
