Dear Richard Chivers,
Lake Victoria is shared by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Commercial fishing started in the 80's with literally zero knowledge in quality and safety. After the Harmonisation drive of EU for the third countries, processors started to implement quality systems based on EU norms and then the FDA's mandatory requirement HACCP for safety. In all three countries, processors have shown capability in implementing and executing quality and safety systems in a period of five years,( which saw EU ban three times).
The landing areas are the prime concern now. Since the catching is cent percent artisanal, using gill nets, and the socio economic situation in the landing sites makes it difficult to monitor and control contamination and spoilage.
We in Tanzania, have a different approach to this. The processors have taken control of the artisanal fishermen, by providing them boats, nets, engines, training etc, and then getting the catch from the fishermen in controlled landing areas approved by the competent authority at prevailing market price. The processors nowadays are quality oriented and not quantity oriented.
Regarding the sustainability of the resources, LVFO (Lake Victoria Fisheries Organisation) is in constant touch with all three nations and stake holders to get a consensus on improving the socio economic conditions by a sustainable fishery.

Does anyone have a source for current information on Kenyan fisheries, mainly for Nile perch in L. Victoria.
Any information regarding food safety or quality would be of interest.
Thanks in advance.
