    Dear Seafood List Members:

    Please excuse duplications.

The IIFET Executive Committee and Executive Director are pleased to announce
the venue for IIFET 2002, the eleventh biennial conference of the
International Institute of Fisheries Economics & Trade*. The conference
will be held at Victoria University of Wellington, in Wellington, New
Zealand, August 19-22, 2002, organized by Bruce Shallard and Associates, a
New Zealand based international fisheries consultancy. Bruce and his
organizing committee members are long term members of IIFET.

Bruce Shallard and Associates have been working closely with IIFET
representatives to obtain support for IIFET 2002 from major New Zealand
fisheries sector organizations, including the New Zealand Ministry of
Fisheries, the Seafood Industry Council of New Zealand, and Deloitte Touche
Tohmatsu. Several international groups, including the Queensland Department
of Primary Industries, have also offered support.

    Themes:

The conference will include a variety of sessions on theoretical and
empirical bio-economic modelling, aquaculture economics, and related
fisheries management and markets topics. In addition, the following proposed
themes will give the conference a Pacific flavor, in the international
    fisheries context:

    * Future paths for rights based fishing (ITQs) - co-management, devolution
    and beyond
    * Fisheries trade in the context of further trade reform through the World
    Trade Organization
    * Economic solutions to customary fishing rights issues
    * Regional approaches to managing High Seas and Migratory fish stocks
    * Ecolabelling for fish
    * Fisheries in the context of Oceans policy

A range of interesting and stimulating international keynote speakers will
be invited to speak on each of these themes. These exciting areas of debate
will ensure a fruitful exchange between participants from New Zealand and
    those from around the globe.

A call for papers containing more detail, including themes and instructions
on submission of abstracts for presentation at the conference, will be
issued soon, and circulated on this list. Please send email to
Ann.L.Shriver@orst.edu to be added to the electronic mailing list to receive
    conference mailings.

Please join IIFET members and non-members alike, fisheries economists,
government managers, academics, researchers, and seafood industry members
from throughout the world in New Zealand next August for a fascinating and
    enjoyable experience.
