On Saturday, my sister (age 69) was admitted to the hospital, having had
diarrhea for 3 days. There was also blood in the stool. She was given
antibiotics and placed on a liquid diet. She was initially diagnosed
    with diverticulitis.

On Sunday the preliminary lab diagnosis was E. coli 0157:H7 and she was
placed on intravenous and taken off the antibiotics. The infection, loss
of blood and lack of nourishment took its toll and caused her to be
    extremely weak.

This morning it was confirmed that she indeed had E. coli 0157:H7. She
has recovered slowly since Saturday. The diarrhea has now abated and as
of yesterday, there was no more blood in the stool.

She is now being removed from the intravenous and will be given some
    solid foods.

This morning the doctor told her that he had reported this to either FDA
or USDA and she would be questioned by that agency.

We thank God that she appears to be on the road to recovery now since
this can be a life threatening situation.

Even though we are involved in food safety and read the reports
concerning food poisoning, it sinks in deeper when it strikes close to
    home.
