Last August we had five cases of gastroenteritis resulting from the
consumption of raw Chinese clams mislabeled as cooked. The clams were
served raw at a Chinese buffet restaurant in Cortland Manor, NY (Westchester
County). All five patients recovered. The New Jersey importer recalled
remaining product from the market and several thousand 20 lb cartons were
destroyed.
(We've had no reported deaths from imported Chinese clams. Who started that
rumor?)

Subject: recent death from raw clams from China
I am looking for more information or corroboration about what I believe is
one death from illness caused by eating raw clams imported from China. The
clams
in question were mislabeled as "cooked" product. Does anyone know of an
up to date database that tracks food illness fatalities, or has other
informaton about this incident.
