FACULTY POSITION - SEAFOOD MICROBIOLOGIST

The OSU Seafood Laboratory in Astoria, Oregon, under the Coastal Oregon
Marine Experiment Station, a division of the College of Agriculture at
Oregon State University, announces the availability of a 12-month tenure
track position for an Assistant Professor in seafood microbiology under the
academic departments of Food Science and Technology, and Microbiology. This
position is 1.0 FTE: 75% research, 25% Extension Sea Grant.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Responsibilities include: Establish a nationally recognized research
program in seafood safety and product development that would serve the needs
of the Oregon and West Coast seafood industry. Provide regional leadership
in seafood microbiology research and work closely with industry and
regulatory agencies in developing research programs. These programs would
include, but not be exclusive of (a) seafood safety with expertise in
traditional and "emerging" pathogens in seafood, (b) value-added product
development with an emphasis on seafood fermentation, and (c) biotechnology
in the area of product development, extraction of novel compounds from
marine resources, and rapid microbial analysis. Develop external research
support and collaborative programs with other investigators, agencies, and
public and private groups; develop a nationally recognized
outreach/extension program for educating the public and collaborating with
industry on microbiological issues related to seafood safety, product
quality, and product development; be fully cognizant in all aspects of
seafood HACCP and advise/assist Oregon processors on interpretation of and
compliance with appropriate seafood regulations and operational issues.
Validate scholarly and outreach activities by peer review and communication
in disciplinary and interdisciplinary peer reviewed journals and books,
presentations at symposia and professional meetings, patents, extension
bulletins, workshop proceedings, and other professional outlets
demonstrating creative outreach contributions. Develop and implement a
professional improvement plan and actively participate in appropriate
professional organizations as well as maintain peer and professional
relationships with responsible units. Develop and maintain cooperative
relationships with organizations and agencies that have similar interests in
seafood microbiology and seafood safety and quality. Be a participating
member of the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station, Sea Grant and
Extension Sea Grant, the Department of Food Sciences, and other university
entities to further the overall objectives and mission of the University as
well as the overall well-being of the Oregon community. Serve on Coastal
Oregon Marine Experiment Station, Department of Food Science and Technology
and other University committees as assigned. Candidates must have a Ph.D.
degree in food microbiology, food science or closely related field or be
expected to complete such a degree by July 2001.

engineering, chemistry and microbiology laboratories accompanied by a pilot
