Peter
Thank you for a good summary. Does anyone else have any more formal information of the current trends of sales of MAP seafood in Britain or Europe than Peters informal observations below? In May 1999 Sue Hill gave quite an upbeat perspective when she wrote:
"It has been estimated that
the number of modified atmosphere packages produced for fish in Europe in the four year
period up to 1990 rose by a factor of five to 250 million; during the early 1990s the estimate
for the UK alone was nearly 200 million, with predicted sales of nearly twice this number
around the middle of the decade. Similarly, it has been reported that in the early 1990s, fish and
seafood represented the 4th largest sector of the UK retail MAP market with a 10% share
(versus 30, 14 and 13%, respectively for the red meat, snack and dried foods, and cooked
meat sectors). "

..... MAP of fish was taken up by several supermarkets in Britain in the mid
1980's, but my informal observations in such outlets in the region of
Britain where I live, southern England, is that MAP is hardly used nowadays
for fishery products, though used for red meats.....
