Maki means roll. Maki sushi is rolled sushi. Usually seaweed rolled around rice with some vegetable, fish or meat inside it. The roll is then cut into sections. Futomaki means 'fat roll'

My Japanese - English dictionary says also that 'makinami' means 'plunging breaker' and 'maki--sashiami' means 'encircling gill net '

so maki 'surrounds' or 'encircles' like the shape of a plunging breaker or an encircling gill net I presume. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Don't know what sushi block is.

    Yours sincerely,
    Richard
