G'day User Group members
I have received an inquiry from a company who is after a procedure for a
simple test that could be used in the field to measure the fat or oil
content of fish. He wants to be able to use the procedure on board fishing
boats as a quality assessment tool.
I am aware of the Fish fatmeter which can be used for such purposes. Other
analytical procedures that I am generally aware of would require either
digestion or extraction of the oil which would result in solvents or acids
on a boat which would not be a really good idea.
I have completed a search on a couple of databases looking for rapid test
methods but have come up with a blank. If there is a rapid test method, no
one has documented it.
Is anyone aware of a relatively simple method that could be used to estimate
the oil content on fish at sea? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
