Export Fish Program HACCP Training Course

The AQIS Export Fish Program is responsible for the regulatory control of
seafood exported from Australia. In 1998/99 the gross value of Australian
seafood exports for human consumption was valued at approximately $1.25
    billion.

The program provides technical and operational advice to both field staff
and industry and is responsible for developing, managing, and reviewing
operational procedures to ensure that Australian legislative and overseas
    government authorities requirements are met.

This has been achieved by the introduction of internationally recognised
Hazard Analysis and Critical Control (HACCP) and Quality Assurance based
    inspection.
To maintain and improve the Fish Program expertise in this area, a new
training course has been developed by AQIS in conjunction with experts on
HACCP from the internationally recognised' Centre for Food Technology" in
    Brisbane Queensland.

The course incorporates, for the first time, HACCP principle's and AQIS
    legislative requirements for Fish Exporters.

All Fish Export Program Inspectorate staff will undertake this training
    course as
this training course is designed specifically to ensure that the Programs
Inspectorate have the most up to date training in HACCP possible. The
course will also be open to industry personnel who wish to update their
    training in HACCP principles.

After a successful pilot program course in March 2000, the three day course
is being launched in early May for the first class of AQIS Fish Inspectors
and will run for an initial period of five courses over a period of six
    months in Brisbane.

All of AQIS's Fish Export Program Inspectorate staff have successfully
completed the course and the first course for industry has been run in
Brisbane, further courses are expected to be run in Cairns and southern Qld
in early 2001. If you want to attend a course in your area contact your
    local AQIS Fish Export Officer
Or Clare Winkel/John Nagle at the Centre for Food Technology on ph 07/3406
