    The following is provided for your review and information. This session
    provides an opportunity to identify food safety priorities associated with
    aquatic foods linked to the USDA-CSREES National Integrated Food Safety
    Initiative.

    > National Integrated Food Safety Initiative, of the
    > Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grants Program

    > The Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES)
    > will conduct a Listening Session for the National Integrated Food Safety
    > Initiative on November 15, 2000. The Listening Session will be open to
    > the public, and all are encouraged to attend. The session will be
    > sponsored by Iowa State University in support of the National Integrated
    > Food Safety Initiative, which is a component of CSREES's Integrated
    > Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grants Program. In Fiscal
    > Year 2000 approximately $14.2 million were awarded for integrated food
    > safety grants.

    > The purpose of the Listening Session will be to identify food safety
    > priorities from the perspectives of industry, consumers, academia, and
    > federal partners, and to develop recommendations for incorporating those
    > priorities into the FY 2001 National Integrated Food Safety Initiative
    > program. The Listening Session will be held in Washington, D.C. at 800
    > 9th St., S.W. (across from Hogates Restaurant on the Potomac waterfront
    > and accessible via the Lenfant Plaza Metro Station). The all-day session
    > will be scheduled from 8:00 to 3:00 on Wednesday, November 15, 2000.

    > In the morning session, approximately 15 individuals will give a 3-4
    > minute presentation on food safety priorities as identified by their
    > respective organizations and/or institutions. Facilitated open discussion
    > will follow the presentations. All attendees are encouraged to engage in
    > the open discussions that will follow the presentations.

    > In the afternoon session, there will be continued discussion and ranking
    > of the identified food safety priorities. Those priorities will be
    > discussed in view of the programmatic areas addressed in the FY 2000 RFP.
    > The major objective for the afternoon will be to develop recommendations
    > for revising the programmatic areas addressed by the Initiative for FY
    > 2001. CSREES hopes to release the new RFP in January or February of 2001.
